The Department of Library andInformation Science was started in the year
1974 with one yearB.L.I.Sc programme. One year M.L.I.Sc programme was
started in 1985and two year integrated M.L.I.Sc programme was started in
1996. Thefounders of the department, who got superannuated, were Sri.
N.Sripathi Naidu, Prof. N. Guruswamy Naidu, and Prof. T. Rajagopal.
Atpresent, there are three competent faculty members in the departmentto
teach the specializations of the course and the modern trends
ininformation technology. All are well qualified and actively engagedin
research. Around 60 papers were published in national andinternational
conference proceedings and journals by the facultymembers in the last
five years. The faculty also acted as Resourcepersons in Academic Staff
Colleges, workshops, Distance education and Training programmes.
The
semester system was introduced in 2002-03and CBCS was introduced from
2006-07. Regarding research, 20 Ph.Ds and 14 M.Phils were awarded in the
department and around 30 scholars are doing research under the
supervision of various faculty members.The research is in progress on
the thrust areas like, User studies,Bibliometric studies, Information
seeking behaviour, Computer networking, and Marketing of Library
services. A system is providedto each faculty member, with internet
connectivity. The department actively participated in the programmes like
Janmabhoomi, clean and green, clean and tidy, Exhibition and Open House
and community services, organized by the university. Many of the alumni
are well placed in different positions in various public, academic,
and special libraries, and institutions and organizations. To meet
the demands of the society and to cope up with the latest trends in
the field, the department is taking all care by updating the syllabus,and
also by conducting study tour internship with the collaboration of
various types of libraries in and around Tirupati. To make the students
well equipped to cope up with the changing information environment, the
department needs to be strengthened in terms of infrastructure and
equipment.
